M. Ravisankar won the Thuraiyur Assembly seat in 2026 with 66,263 votes, a margin of 9,614 -- his first election to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Thuraiyur is constituency 146, in Tiruchirappalli district and within the Perambalur parliamentary constituency.
The town of Thuraiyur itself grew up around a temple whose Chola-period architecture points to a settlement many centuries old. It became a municipality in 1970 and was raised to Selection Grade in 2008; it is today the headquarters of its taluk, and had a population of 32,439 at the 2011 census.
Farming shapes most of the constituency, with paddy and corn the principal crops. The town has long been a handloom centre, and goldsmithing remains a familiar trade in its streets.
Days after the result, he was elected Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, and in September was named chairperson of its Committee of Privileges.
